Collection of Curiosities
An Anthology of Waking Dreams by Scott A. Williams
From an e-mail, attaching two of these stories, to my Aunt Lori (to whom I have sent a number of my creations over the years) dated Thursday August 24, 2006:
"About a year ago, I began a project which I hope will be a big part of my supposed career. It started with a story, ('the Insomniac,' attached,) but flowered into a huge concept.
"By the time I was finished writing that one story, I realized there was more to it than the events of a single person's night. That there was practically a whole universe of stories to explore, taking place in that city at night. So I drew up plans.
"The idea, which becomes more evident in the second story ('The Spat,' also attached,) is that I am writing a book of short stories that is also a novel. I've got plans for about a dozen stories, (I've written the first drafts of 5 so far,) each of which are from the voice of a different character, with overlapping themes, events, and settings. The idea, I hope, is to create an overall impression of that big 'everything is connected, we're not alone' idea, as well as tell some neat stories that range from tragic to romantic to funny, and in between."
That, I think, sums it up. It started in September of 2005, when I was trying to write a story on my iBook in order to get more use out of it. After trying and failing to adequately start work on an earlier idea, a novel called "Melancholy Catatonia" (which ultimately and successfully became my NaNoWriMo project that November,) I began writing "The Insomniac." Once the concept was in place, inspiration began coming at me from all sides. I decided upon numerous ideas of peoples' personalities that could be explored, various settings and events I could include. The rest, as they say, is history. As the stories eventually are finalized and posted, I hope you enjoy them all, both on their own terms and for the big picture they paint.
The Lovers
The Last Dream
The Right Touch
The Curb
The Killer
The Affair
The Meeting
The End of the Night
As far as writing, I'm more than 2/3 of the way done this project, with a wordcount of about 47,000 after nearly 2 years of off-and-on devotion. I'm pretty proud of that. I have uploaded most of the stories I have written. There are a few stories I am only partway through (I paused writing The Right Touch to start on The Fire) and two stories (the two blank ones above that) that I have completed, but am not satisfied with, because they deal with controversial material and I know that I have to revise them; but that won't be a priority until I've basically finished all the other ones. This is more or less a guess at their order. I know the ones that start and end it, but I keep second-guessing the middle ones, particularly the Last Dream which would do well to go later, maybe swapped with The Killer. In any case, thanks to everyone who's been encouraging thus far, and if you're reading this, feedback and suggestions are always appreciated.
